Strange. The GLE350d is not available in the USA anymore.

I live down the road from the plant that manufactures the GLC, GLE, GLE Coupe, and GLS. This had manufacturer plates so I’m guessing they’re either testing it or just teasing eagle-eyed bystanders like me.

They may be cooking up an updated diesel model... the 350d was avaible for the 2016 model year, but was abruptly removed from the lineup for the 2017 model year.

Could be. Or it’s just a car for another market they have over here for evaluation/testing. Automakers are allowed to request exemptions to operate prototype and test vehicles which may not be regulatory-compliant. After a certain time period, the exempted vehicles must be
1) retrofitted with whatever is needed to make them compliant, or
2) returned to the country of origin, or
3) scrapped.
I work in Dearborn and there’s always other-market stuff like Rangers, Kas, Ecosports, Mondeo wagons, and so on running around the area with manufacturer plates.

Maybe. After all, it is manufacturer plates.

Prototype unlikely, it’s a 5 year old chassis and 8 year old engine. Probably just a random quality control vehicle.
